W.E.B. DuBois
W.E.B.(William Edward Burghardt) Du Bois (1868-1963) was a 20th century leader in history, sociology, and political science. Dubois was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896. He was a great leader in fighting racial discrimination. One of the founders of the NAACP, and an editor for the organization’s “Crisis Magazine”, Du Bois was an intellect who stood above his contemporaries. On August 27, 1963, on the eve of the March on Washington, Dubois died in Accra, Ghana, shortly after becoming a Ghanan citizen. He left behind more than 2,000 documents credited to his name, including poetry, plays, books and articles. His love of learning still inspires young African Americans dedicated to teaching.
